Review:
On the west coast of Sri Lanka, Alankuda Beach is on a peninsular with the Indian ocean on one side and a lagoon on the other. The main attraction of this hotel is the dolphin and whale watching boat rides. There are thousands of bottlenose and spinner dolphins in the area and motoring around in a small eight seater boat with them jumping and swimming all around us was quite an amazing sight.
The hotel is rustic and wholly constructed from material in the area; coconut palm thatched roofs, ochre hued mud walls, coconut shell light fittings and so on. The villas and cabanas are very private, each walled (with coconut palms) and with a little garden. However, they are very open within the walls. We were in a two bedroom villa that had a wide veranda along the length of it with benches that doubled as beds if needed. The doors leading into the 2 bedrooms are the only doors in the villa. The en suite showers are essentially in the back yard of the villa so if being exposed to the elements in all your glory is not your thing, it could be an issue.
All meals are local food and is a set menu of what ever is available that day. Being by the ocean means it always included seafood. We had a crab curry for lunch on arrival that went down very well. However, if curry for all meals is too much to stomach they will prepare simple fare such as pasta on request.
One of the best features of the hotel is the long wet edge pool looking out to the Indian ocean. There are two cabanas by the pool to hang out in or there is the larger cabana, also by the pool, where the meals are served. And if you want to be closer to the sea the boat house has a hammock and deck chairs and a bar right on the beach.
Another nice touch are the eskys' full of complimentary water, soft drinks and beer that are available at all times to the guests.
It's a small hotel in a secluded area so peace and tranquility are in abundance. But if being in a constant state of relaxation is not your thing there are a lot of water based activities available.
We spent three days there and were definitely not ready to leave.
