A resurgent Murray River laps at lawns flanking Aquacaf, making the waterside shack and umbrella-clad dining deck the very picture of relaxation. The menu is simple and generous, forgoing expensive, fancy ingredients to instead deploy fresh local foods wisely, with premium fish and plentiful herbs invigorating outstanding salads. The favourite dish remains a fish pasty with plump mulloway chunks, leeks, potato, cheddar and dill in a flaky crème fraîche pastry, though the other fish dishes deserve attention (a regional take on bouillabaisse, for instance, incorporating more mulloway, cockles and mussels). The fisherman’s tasting plate is a smart entrée, built around roasted and pickled vegetables with slices of frittata, grilled prawns and fried Coorong mullet. A small wine list offers interesting local whites and beers, while service is slick, yet as calm as the setting.
