Best New Hotels 2007: Eugenia, Bangkok, Thailand

This 12-room hotel whisks guests from the new international airport in its vintage Jaguar, Mercedes or Daimler limousine. Inside the colonial-inspired mansion off central Sukhumvit Road, the owner displays his own 300-plus antique collection – including a fully intact crocodile skin on the second-storey landing. In the chic Zheng He Lounge, local style-setters congregate on overstuffed couches to enjoy whisky and good cigars. Outside, under swaying palms, the generous celadon-tiled swimming pool takes the edge off Bangkok’s daily swelter. Rooms make visitors feel like guests in an elegant private home thanks to fine Belgian linens, hand-beaten copper bathtubs and fragrant vanilla candles. The hotel itself was inspired by ‘Eugenia’, a friend of the owner said to be the very embodiment of chic sophistication and gracious living.
