Best New Hotels 2008:Banyan Tree Desert Resort & Spa, Al Areen

At first it’s like a mirage, then you realise it’s really an oasis. The Gulf’s first Banyan Tree resort is a shimmering sanctuary in the Bahraini desert; a 13-hectare spread of fountains, pools, gardens and luxurious guest compounds. Each of the 78 desert and royal villas is like a mini-resort with swimming pool, Jacuzzi, infinity baths, butlers and chefs. There’s little to do here except unwind, dine at one of the hotel’s high-end restaurants and lose yourself in the gigantic spa/hydrotherapy garden. Spanning 10,000sqm, or about 40 tennis courts, the spa is an incredibly sumptuous temple of self-pampering.

We love The privacy, the decadence and the slightly mad but marvellous spa.
