Best Wine Bar List: The Melbourne Supper Club, Melbourne

The Melbourne Supper Club wine list brings together all the best aspects of a great list and should be considered the benchmark for content, style, presentation and balance. It covers more than 70 pages and includes an extensive range of New and Old World wines. The wines selected have been carefully chosen, balancing established stars and emerging new players to provide the customer with an interesting and stimulating choice.

The list has been expertly organised so as not to intimidate or be overloaded by some varieties, regions or styles. It is easy to read and there are useful educational vignettes providing added interest.

Needless to say, all the great wine styles and regions are represented with current releases and appropriately chosen back vintages. The by-the-glass list is first class and there is a good selection of half-bottles and larger-format wines.

The prices for a list of this scale, choice and quality are appropriate, providing value-for-money wines for both the modest budget and those wanting to indulge in the truly great wines of the world. There is also a good range of prices within each section of the list, providing enticing options no matter how much you want to spend.

Georgia Roberts from the Supper Club’s wine-buying group, which is headed by Sophie Otton, says the aim was to create a list that was readable and easy to understand, with good balance.

“We wanted a wine list that the more adventurous would find interesting and appealing, but that others could approach with confidence,” she says.
