Patience may be needed to secure a plum waterside table in spectacular arm’s reach of musing pelicans and float planes that regularly lumber across Rose Bay. The reason? Catalina is a popular function venue and can be off limits to à la carte diners, so check in early for a table. The plain white curvaceous space complements appreciation of its bay views and satisfying, mostly fishy fare. Hook the Catalan whitebait and duck-egg dish, or the crab and snapper crépinette on lightly minted mushy peas – an exemplary fishcake floater. Although incongruous, the beer and honey battered fish doesn’t disappoint either, but a side of thick, floury chips doesn’t belong in its company. Where’s that pelican? Salvation comes with the remarkable all-stops-out wine list, the passion of proprietors Michael and Judy McMahon, which delivers depth and global breadth.
