Williams-Sonoma opening

US kitchen and homewares retailer Williams-Sonoma opened the doors to its four new Bondi Junction stores - Williams-Sonoma, West Elm, Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids - on 1 May. The company's multi-level retail space is the first of its kind outside North America and its arrival in Australia is set to cause a significant shift in the way we shop for the home.

We saw A sneak preview of the luxe Hamptons-esque furnishings and homewares at Pottery Barn, its children's off-shoot Pottery Barn Kids and the more affordable, trend-driven offerings at West Elm. Then there was Williams-Sonoma with its high-end kitchenware, tableware, food and adjoining cooking school, which offers two-, three- and five-hour classes on topics ranging from butchery and bread-making to vegetarian cooking and knife skills.

The food A casual, buffet-style lunch by Cook and Waiter, which included organic carrot salad with creamy labna and orange oil dressing; zucchini strips with green olive, poached lemon, parsley and almonds; a zingy watermelon salad with feta and pomegranate; and Syrian-style chicken with orzo.

The drink Ginger beer with pineapple juice.

We loved The Williams-Sonoma cooking school. It's the first of its kind in the world, and we're chuffed to have it on our shores.
