Flour and Stone Recipes

Baker extraordinaire Nadine Ingram of Sydney's Flour and Stone cooks up a sweet storm for Easter, including the much loved bakery's greatest hit.

Savoury tarts

Will your next baking project be a flaky puff pastry with pumpkin, goat's curd and thyme, or a classic bacon and Stilton tart? As autumn settles in, we're ticking these off one by one.

Fast autumn dinners

Autumn weather signals the arrival of soups, broths, roasts and more hearty meals.

Roasted cauliflower salad with yoghurt dressing and almonds

The cauliflower is roasted until it starts to caramelise, which adds extra depth of flavour to this winning salad. Serve it warm or at room temperature.

1980s recipes

Australia saw some bold moves in the ’80s, and we’re not just talking hairstyles. Greater cultural references started peppering the menus of our restaurants, and home-grown ingredients won a new appreciation. The dining scene was coming of age and a new band of pioneers led the charge.

Melbournes finest meet Worlds Best

Leading chefs descend on Melbourne in April for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. We asked local hospitality folk who they’d abduct for the day and where they’d take them to show off their city. There may be coffee, there may be culture, but in the end it’s cocktails.

Roti canai

Here, we've made the dough in a food processor, but it's really quick and simple to do by hand as well. If the dough seems a little too wet just add a little more flour.

There are palates and there are palettes, and tomorrow night at Sydney's Create or Die gallery a group art exhibition toying with both has plenty to feast on.

Curated by illustrator Kim Siew, For the Face sees almost 20 artists and makers across design, illustration, photography, film and installation showing works inspired by food.

"Art extends across so many ventures other than just art on walls," says Siew. "Printmaker Stephanie Peters' works in the show use ingredients from her kitchen cupboard to dye fabrics. This show is as much about the process behind the art as it is about the works themselves."

Melbourne-based crochet lover and Instagram favourite Chili Philly (aka Phil Ferguson) exhibits a selection of his wild food-themed hats, while up-and-comers Gal Dente (Jessica Johnson and Jorja Boon-Kriesel) will present Blood, a Caravaggio-inspired recipe series shot by Sydney photographer Alex Reznick.

Typographer Luke Lucas, ceramicist Hayden Youlley and textile artist Julie Paterson will be showing works, as will Gourmet Traveller  art director Anna Vu, who will show nine new pieces from her ongoing series Good Food Crap Drawing.

"I'm a little nervous to be exhibiting for the first time," says Vu. "But on the other hand, I'm just happy to be part of an exhibition celebrating all things food."

It wouldn't be Marrickville without some feel-good community stuff, too. Food-themed workshops run over the weekend, a labne and whey tutorial with Full Circle cheesemaker Kristen Allan, and another with Adrian Baiada on urban gardening among them. Flower arranging, a food-zine library and a pop-up design store filled with ceramics from The Fortynine Studio and local Cornersmith pickles round out the offering.

For the face and then some. See you there.

For the Face, Thursday 8 October, 6pm-9pm until 4pm on Sunday 11 October, Create or Die Gallery, 10 Mitchell St, Marrickville, NSW. Tickets to the workshops, from $60, are available at createordie.com.au.
