Mike McEnearney is hosting a truffle dinner

Black truffles

Black truffles

The anticipation that accompanies truffle season is almost over, with No. 1 Bent Street celebrating the start of this year's harvest with a Truffle Dinner on 15 June, featuring five courses with matched wines.

One of the first truffle events of the season, the dinner sees owner and executive chef Mike McEnearney and head chef Jeffrey De Rome using the revered fungi in dishes such as cobia sashimi with braised truffled mushroom and radish, a goat's cheese soufflé with rosemary and truffle and a chicken demi-deuil cooked on the spit.

Try our favourite truffle recipes

Each course will be paired with Ravensworth wines selected by winemaker Bryan Martin, including a seven-month skin-contact pinot gris blend and a preview of their 2017 gamay noir.

Truffle farmer Jayson Mesman will be supplying the truffles from the first hunt of the season on his property in Mount Majura, near Canberra.

For those who are curious about the origins of the highly-prized ingredient, you can watch Mesman and his dogs in action thanks to a video of their truffle hunt, made by Sydney Direct Fresh Produce.

And if you've got a taste for the black gold, make the most of the fleeting season with one of the many festivals happening around the country.

Truffle Melbourne, VIC

The annual celebration of Victoria's truffles, the 2017 event includes a weekend in the Mornington Peninsula where you can experience a private truffle hunt in Red Hill and a five-course degustation at the Flinders Hotel. Don't miss a weekend of food stalls, produce and classes at Queen Victoria Market or a Sunday lunch at Ombra on July 2. Runs throughout June and July.

Truffle Kerfuffle, Manjimup, WA

Western Australia's best and brightest culinary talent are taking part in the seventh iteration of this weekend festival, with Vasse Felix's Aaron Carr cooking local produce over an open fire and Jesse Blake (Petition Kitchen) showcasing ingredients specially grown, aged and crafted over many months in collaboration with farmers and producers. David Coomer will show you around his own trufferie and there are also plenty of opportunities to try the region's wines. It's happening June 23-25.

Truffle Festival, Canberra, ACT

With events throughout the season, Canberra's festival is a reliable option for anyone who missed the truffle memo. Events include a weekly degustation menu on Mondays at Pulp Kitchen, hunts at four truffle farms in the region including a cooking demonstration after the hunt at Macenmist, and a seminar on the ins and outs of owning a trufferie. The festival runs from June 12 - September 2.
