St Kilda locals rejoiced at the return of Andrew McConnell to the neighbourhood (the first time since his stint at Circa) and with Golden Fields, his take on Chinese and Korean food, there’s plenty to make a ruckus about. An eating house and bar à la his city venture, Cumulus Inc. – with which it shares, looks-wise, an obvious lineage – Golden Fields is certainly fashionable. It also has a sense of fun, both in the wine list, which divides white wine into two categories, riesling and “Other Whites”, and in the food, which includes the cult-worthy New England lobster roll, a brilliant kimchi-powered version of steak tartare, and fresh sea urchin sitting on crisp bread with salty lardo. Whole flounder layered with slivers of lime, a strangely beautiful black sesame cake with lime sorbet and an elegant take on bang bang chicken all explain why Golden Fields has been packed from day one.
