I am heading to New York next month for my first visit. I've heard from several people that it is hard to find a good coffee in New York, which absolutely amazed me... What about all those Italian immigrants? Anyway, I would be most happy for any tips on where to get a serious coffee while I'm there! Thanks!

look for a cafe serving Kitten Coffee, roasted by an Australian bloke who also teaches the staff how to make the coffees

if you're in East Village go to Ninth Street Espresso at 341 East 10th Street which looks onto Tompkins Square Park. Coffee is all they serve and they do it well.

Try Eataly (cnr 23rd and 5th Ave) within are 2 cafes, Cafe Lavazza and Cafe Vergnano....both make a decent cup of coffee. Also, try FIKA Cafe (407 Park Ave, between 28th and 29th streets.)

Bluebird Coffee 72 East 1st Street It's owned by a barrista from melbs. Say no more. Great coffee and you can have the great pleasure of looking down your nose at young things who come in to get tall vanilla skinny decaf soy frappachino while you sip your latte.

Thank you so much everyone for your tips! I have just discovered the NY Times has an app available called "The Scoop" which covers restaurants, shopping etc and also contains a section on the best coffee. It includes a map too.

Ace Hotel is the best by far. It is worth the walk there!
Eataly is also great.
Good luck! You are right that good coffee is hard to find
