GT Travel Awards 2008: Best eco-tourism initiative
Maria Island Walk, Tas
Through their committed stewardship of this island off Tasmania’s east coast, Ian and Bronwyn Johnstone have brought Maria and its fragile ecology to the attention of thousands of visitors. Their four-day guided walk through the island national park guarantees both an understanding of its convict and colonial history, and up-close encounters with wildlife. Maria is a sanctuary for endangered species; its abundant fauna ranges from Forester kangaroos to the pademelon (small kangaroo-like marsupial), while birdlife extends to 130 recorded species including the threatened Cape Barren goose. The walk is billed as ‘achievable adventure’, an experience of an island ecosystem that imparts unique memories without requiring superhuman effort. And, always, the emphasis is on low-impact adventure and respect for the natural environment.
