GT Travel Awards 2008: Best tour operator

World Expeditions
From its beginnings in the 70s, when this home-grown outfit began leading adventurers on Himalayan treks, World Expeditions has specialised in guiding travellers to remote corners of the earth. From little things big things grow, and today the Sydney-based company leads tours to every continent, offering experiences as diverse as walking with penguins on South Georgia to trekking in Turkmenistan. Despite its growth, World Expeditions remains true to its pioneering philosophy of small-group, low-impact tours – often led by experts in their fields, such as mountaineers Brigitte Muir and Peter Hillary – and is widely regarded as a leader in responsible tourism. The company is committed to making its operations carbon-neutral, gives clients a chance to work on community projects and, in 2005, launched a philanthropy program benefitting charities such as The Fred Hollows Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund.
