With its cliff-side perch, Icebergs is as close to the sea as a restaurant can get and the menu pays due respect to the life aquatic. Steamed spanner crab meat sits atop a creamy Venetian-style white polenta, the delicate flavours and textures expertly balanced. Simple sauces served alongside the fish options enhance but never overwhelm the hero (go for classic lemon butter, and if stripy trumpeter is on the menu, it’s not to be missed). Char-grilled 30-day-aged ox steak with melting marrow and a few judicious drops of aged balsamic vinegar, too, is a standout. Desserts depart from the simple formula and suffer for it. A crisp ricotta and cedro-filled cannoli with orange granita would be perfect without an underwhelming orange jelly and superfluous orange crisp. Such off-notes are all the more jarring for the high prices.Sort that out and Icebergs is unforgettable – for all the right reasons.
