Kenji is an unassuming place, instantly welcoming with its cool hues and laid-back vibe. Kenji Ito’s inventive dishes draw on Japanese, South East Asian and Western elements: poached Tasmanian lobster with avocado and mango combines spikes of flavour and crunch from a sticky-sweet balsamic soy base, fennel batons and wasabi mayo. Fried quail is a flavour sensation, with splashes of colour from bright orange roe and syrupy black vinegar salsa. While a King George whiting and corn “spring roll” is let down by a Gruyère-style cheese filling, the accompanying miso-spiced king prawns are outstanding, as is perfectly seared big-eye tuna with a “Japanese dukkah” crust. Ito toys with sweet and sour flavours in a lime lychee soufflé with a cinnamon crust, tapioca coconut cream and candied rhubarb. Choose from a hot or cold sake list, a decent beer selection or limited wines by the glass.
