Knee Deep in Margaret River

It’s not the flashiest place to dine in Margaret River but beyond Knee Deep’s timber decking and tarpaulin walls lies a fresh-faced eatery wearing its heart on its sleeve. Never mind the brevity of the menu –the kitchen makes every dish count, from savoury cannoli and their payload of rich goat’s curd to crunchy prawns crumbed in coconut and coriander with a punchy Vietnamese salad. Slow-roasted lamb shoulder with superior trimmings proves familiar doesn’t have to equal boring, while crisp-skinned chook atop a jumble of cacciatore, white beans, Sicilian olives and tomato puts an Italian twist on meat ’n’ three veg. A fitting finale, the frozen cookies and cream parfait elevates the ice-cream sandwich to new salted orange butterscotch heights. Knee Deep’s wine offerings aren’t as consistent as some of its neighbours’, but this remains one of the region’s premier lunch outings.
