Built over a man-made lake amid woodland, Millbrook’s stone and wood restaurant is a majestic lunch venue enhanced by honest cooking. The garden’s wealth of largely heirloom produce features prominently on the menu, as does the grill, which warms through tender Fremantle octopus and bestows piquant char on fat, Burmese-spiced prawns. Smooth tortellini encasing ricotta and garden greens are peasant fare upgraded to business class, while thinly shaved discs of Amelia Park eye fillet reinforce the kitchen’s ability to leave well enough alone. Servings are generous – most entrées easily work as mains – but for the hollow-legged, satisfying desserts await, such as crème Catalan, the vanilla-spiked custard set over a base of chocolate mousse studded with orange segments. Leave the whole afternoon free if you can: the serene vistas and impressive estate wines make a long lunch irresistible.
