In part, Mud is a neighbourhood hangout. The bar is as good a place as any in Launceston for a drink and the outdoor communal tables overlooking its namesake muddy river are winning spots to be on a sunny day. But the food is its biggest draw. There’s nothing unusual or radical here, just the sort of dishes that make for the restaurant equivalent of a night in front of the fire with your slippers on. The likes of tomato salad with salted ricotta, chicken liver parfait, pork and veal meatballs with gnocchi, minute steak with parsley salad and fries, and blueberry and goat curd clafoutis cooked to order, all press the comfort button. They don’t ask you to think too much about what you’re eating but they deliver flavour in spades and are totally in tune with Mud’s completely informal vibe. A decent selection of wines with plenty of options by the glass completes the welcome.
