Check out the magnolia bakery near west 57th, the velvet cupcakes are sensational. Otherwise the Shake Shack on West 47th and 8th Ave - Great burgers

Definitely the best pizza in Manhattan can be found at Lombardi's on Spring Street in Little Italy. The place oozes atmosphere, and is cheap as chips. Pizzas are cooked in a coal fired oven.

Hi - in April 2010 these were our faves
Dos Caminos - quite a few around Manhatan - great chicken and fab mojitos Website http://www.doscaminos.com/
Cafe Gittane in Nolita (French Moroccan) - great coffee (hard to find in NYC) and we had brekky there - amazing avocado on toast with chilli and great baked eggs Website - http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/cafe-gitane/menus/main.html
Good lunch option under $10 - Hale and Hearty soups - various locations website - http://haleandhearty.com/
Gourmet Garage Soho (and other locations) - good lunch option under $10 - pre-made rolls with fresh ingredients from Deli website - http://www.gourmetgarage.com/
Agree with post above for special meal try Balthazaar, Budakkan or have also heard great reports of The Little Owl (http://www.thelittleowlnyc.com/)
So jealous ! Enjoy
