Mick Chatto has moved from Kingston’s Artespresso to the lake’s northern shores to launch this hip new diner in the city centre. With experience at Sydney seafood institutions Pier and Fishface under his belt, Chatto’s penchant for poisson is evident here in an elegant salmon carpaccio lifted by hints of citrus and aromatic micro-herbs. It’s a great opener for richer offerings such as poached lobster with shaved fennel, or a robust ocean trout terrine with cornichons and brioche. And for a diversion back to terra firma, try interesting side dishes such as poached duck egg and asparagus. The inner-city space of polished concrete floors and a brightly lit bar suits casual grazing as much as formal dining. While service standards need a lift, an impressive cocktail selection and one of the best wine lists in town make Pelagic one of the catches of the year for Canberrans.
