The formerly working-class quarter of 'Er Pigneto', as the locals call it, was once the location for milestone movies in the history of Italian cinema, such as Rossellini's
Roma Città Aperta and Pasolini's
Accattone. Intelligent city planning has turned the area into the hub of Roman nightlife, a place full of pedestrian precincts, artists' workshops, galleries and restaurants. With its 'revisited' traditional Mediterranean menus - breakfast, lunch, tapas and dinner - the elegant but informal Primo, opened last year by restaurateurs Marco Gallotta and Massimo Terzulli and designer Roberta Paolucci, is already a culinary institution.
