Does your average Bangladeshi listen to R&B, dine with Laguiole cutlery, or take her lassi with a slug of rum? Perhaps not, but that’s what makes Bang such a joy. The space caters to a fun-loving crowd with a sleek tiled bar, communal tables and red neon. An all-Portuguese wine list (a reference to the subcontinent’s first European visitors) also breaks with tradition, but adds to the fun. Young, smiling staff are eager but not intrusive, their tiger-print uniforms matched in boldness by the menu. Bhaji fritters get a contemporary twist: big leaves of kale deep-fried in a besan batter, served with tomato chutney. You’ll find freshness in a palate-cleansing salad of cucumber, snake beans, red grapes, mint, chickpeas and pickled onion, finished off with toasted almonds, not to mention the sticks of mango kulfi. Don’t miss the pulau kalijeera – rice infused with saffron and ghee, perfect for soaking up the juices of a goat curry rich with green chilli. Bang on.
