David's hums with renewed energy since its transformation two years ago into a haven of home-style Shanghainese cuisine. Families and friends feast under white lanterns, while waiters flit busily between bare tables in this split-level, whitewashed warehouse off Chapel Street. With its peaked ceiling and creepers rambling over timber chests, the place has a magical, beach-house air. Simplicity is now key: entrées might include chunky slices of fried eggplant in a sweet chilli sauce or a DIY shredded duck wrap. Sharing is encouraged and waiters are adept at suggesting pleasing pairings: the sweet-sour chicken and chestnut works surprisingly well with a traditional dish of fried rice, bok choy and eggs. Coconut and rum sago pudding makes a pleasantly light finish. A reasonably priced range of appealing local and international wines is spot-on, with some choice drops for those marking an occasion.
