Il Centro

Il Centro is like a reliable, conservative old friend - not the life of the party, but enduring, dependable and always around when you need it. Despite the casual, riverside atmosphere, waiters in starched white aprons deliver the kind of unobtrusive, precise service that has become a rarity, and sommelier Shawn Gomes oversees a very enticing wine selection. The kitchen is a well-oiled machine, turning out a long list of crowd-pleasers. Kimberley Red beef is the basis for faultless carpaccio, a sphere of light, smooth Woodside goat's curd mousse the centrepiece, with a scattering of crisp-fried capers and garlic chips. The creaminess of squid-ink risotto is played off against the texture of scallops and a smattering of tart pickled fennel. To finish there's a predictable choice of (not necessarily Italian) comfort food; dense Valrhona chocolate mousse will satisfy the most dedicated chocoholic.
