It starts and ends with the choux pastry swan. You see it on a dessert trolley as you enter the Art Deco-influenced dining room, and chances are you'll have that dessert sitting on your plate by evening's end. This is Mayflower's charm - its nostalgia for the hotel-luxe of yesteryear, from the restaurant's plush-velvet seats to the grand piano serenade. At tables with crisp white linen, Chateaubriand is served from a sterling-silver domed carvery trolley. Coquilles Saint-Jacques provides the ultimate comfort, arriving with a bubbling layer of molten Gruyère over Hervey Bay scallops. Steak tartare is textbook, with the finest latticed potato crisps in town. The signature duck and tangerine pie is a handsome dome of flaky pastry, its sour-cherry relish topping an elegant foil to the rich duck braise within. To finish, the grand, bow-legged dessert trolley circles the room, heaving with sachertorte, mousse and blancmange, but you'll only have eyes for that choux swan.
