Chef Javier Codina isn't afraid to mix Catalan technique with local ingredients, including tropical fruit, often with great success at this Barcelona-meets-Brisbane, semi-alfresco restaurant. Octopus sporting smoky paprika heat teams with a salad of pineapple, coriander, mint and chilli; jamón shares a plate with persimmon segments and capers, while tempura whiting is accompanied by a surprisingly successful passionfruit alioli. Occasional lapses - a dry guinea fowl pie, say - are minor wobbles in a winning package that includes a sheltered courtyard dining space, charmingly decorated with chandeliers and plants, a smart, largely Australian and Spanish wine list generous with by-the-glass options and service that's both friendly and efficient. Noteworthy desserts include a deconstructed crema Catalana with excellent Pedro Ximénez jelly, underlining Moda's potential to surprise and delight.
