Word has it that much of the finance news in Australia is gathered simply by observing who's having lunch with whom at Bar & Grill on a given day, such is its hold on the nation's brokers of influence. But it's popular with mere mortals, too, partly because they're treated nearly as regally as the plutocrats, partly because of that frisson of power, but mostly because the food is excellent. The menu might be overwhelming but the guiding principle is easy: dishes are simple in their conception, made worthy of their hefty price tags by dint of exceptional ingredients. The steak? It's simply the best in the land. But the seafood is also outstanding (not least the charcoal-roasted flathead), the sides a meal in themselves. Even vegetarians eat well, tripping from "silk handkerchief" pasta with freshly pounded pesto to a fine fig tart with goat's curd marshmallow to close. Come for the cooking, stay for the service, revel in the remarkable cellar.
