Sails enjoys prime Hastings Street real estate, opening to a palm-framed vista of golden sand and gentle waves; such an arresting aspect deserves equally engaging food and service, and happily Sails nails both. The menu brims with the fruits of the sea, whether it be crisp battered mahi mahi and chips or toothfish glazed in a luscious orange miso reduction and accompanied by pickled fennel, radish and cucumber. Those who are ambivalent about the pleasures of seafood are not forgotten, either. Bites of caramelised pork, chilli jam and toasted coconut on betel leaves are explosions of flavour and texture, as are tiny tacos of barbecued beef and avocado chilli salsa. Linger with your Champagne or a glass from the star-studded international wine line-up, then dive into a rich chocolate delice, paired with plumped Pedro Ximénez-soaked raisins and lavender cream. A beachside stroll will help work off the kilojoules.
