The Grand

One doesn't ordinarily turn to a dining room adjacent to a pub for old-fashioned restaurant seriousness, but that's precisely what The Grand delivers to its devoted clientele. One example: professional waiters - not part-timers waiting for their agents to call - navigate well-spaced tables set with linen and heavy flatware. Jonathan Corso's menu eschews both the red sauces and Forever Summer breeziness of Italian cliché for flavours of earthy substance. Autumnal pleasures might include house-made ribbons of tagliatelle dressed with a ragù of long-braised boar and porcini, or a pink-seared venison loin with a solidly savoury crust, sweetened with truffled honey and vincotto, and accompanied by thyme-tinged king oyster mushrooms. Desserts are classics executed with panache, such as the custard-filled bombolini atop house-made honeycomb with caramel ice-cream. Luxe as a lay day at Lake Como.
