Berry recipes

Whether it's raspberries paired with chocolate in a layer cake, or blueberries with lemon in a tart; berries are a welcome addition to any dessert. Here are delicious recipes with berries.

Coconut crab and green mango salad

"This salad bursts with fresh, vibrant flavours and became a signature on my Paramount menus," says Christine Manfield. "I capitalised on using green mangoes in many dishes as they became more widely available. Blue swimmer crabs from South Australia have the most delicious sweet meat. It's best to buy them whole, cook them yourself and carefully pick the meat from the shell - a tedious task but it gives the best flavour. This entree also works well with spanner crab meat (you can buy this in packs ready cooked from reliable fishmongers). The sweetness of the crab, the richness of the fresh coconut and the sourness of green mango make a wonderful partnership. It's all about harmony on the palate and using the very best produce."

Melbourne's best cheap eats

Cafe Di Stasio

Cafe Di Stasio

The best places in Melbourne to catch a bargain meal.

There are real bargains to be found at lunch, with set-course deals at places such as Café Di Stasio, Yu-u and Maha, while Shannon Bennett's diffusion brand Café Vue (430 Little Collins St, Melbourne, 03 9691 3899) does a great line in quality pies, salads and burgers.

There's good Malaysian fare at Mamak (366 Lonsdale St, Melbourne, 03 9670 3137) including impressive house-made roti.

Yu-u

At The Moor's Head (2/774 High St, Thornbury, 03 9484 0173) the team from Rumi make "inauthentic" pizza with a Middle-Eastern bent. Hell of the North (135 Greeves St, Fitzroy, 03 9417 6660) is a beautifully designed side-street bar and restaurant serving a European bistro-leaning menu that's one of the gentrified suburb's true bargains.

And the precision focus of Gami Chicken and Beer (535 Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne, 03 9670 3232)  - Korean fried chicken and cold beer - would be just as wonderful even without the super-low prices.
