2016 was all about slow-roasting, fresh pasta and comfort food. These are the recipes you clicked on most this year, counting back to number one.

Sydney's best dishes 2016

For our 50th anniversary issue in 2016, we scoured Australia asking two questions: What dishes are making waves right now? What flavours will take us into the next half-century? Sydney provided 16 answers.

Summer feta recipes

Whether in a fresh salad or seasonal seafood dish, feta's creamy tang can be used to add interest to a variety of summer dishes.

Mango recipes

Nothing says summer like mangoes. Go beyond the criss-cross cuts - bake a mango-filled meringue loaf with lime mascarpone, start off the day with a sweet coconut quinoa pudding with sticky mango, or toss it through a spicy warm weather Thai salad.

Christmas vegetarian recipes

The versatility of vegetarian dishes means they can be served alongside meat and seafood, or enjoyed simply as they are. With Christmas just around the corner, we’ve put together some of our favourite vegetarian recipes to appease both herbivores and carnivores alike.

Melbourne's best pub dining

Acland Street Cantina

Acland Street Cantina

The team that's been wowing the west with excellent steak and oysters for the past few years at The Station Hotel (59 Napier St, Footscray, 03 9687 2913) now has another outlet at the Wayside Inn (446 City Rd, South Melbourne, 03 9682 9119) where exec chef Sean Donovan oversees a lengthy menu that focuses on red gum-fired steaks and meats from the rôtisserie.

It's in a good neck of the woods for quality pubs, with nearby O'Connell's (cnr Coventry & Montague sts, South Melbourne, 03 9699 9600) channelling old-school pub food through a prism of great ingredients and clever cooking, and Lamaro's (273-279 Cecil St, South Melbourne, 03 9690 3737) dishing up quality comfort food with Asian and European influences.

The Station Hotel

At the Robert Burns Hotel (376 Smith St, Collingwood, 03 8669 5190), Spain is front and centre on the  menu and wine list, while the Acland Street Cantina at The Prince (2 Acland St, St Kilda, 03 9536 1175) surfs the Mexican wave.
