Hot Plates: Rye Café & Bar, Canberra

Smørrebrød by day, craft beer by night.

Smørrebrød at Rye
Rye brings a welcome Scandi sensibility to Braddon in the form of smørrebrød and minimalist pale timber surrounds. Owners Ben Pigram and Jacob Hoffmeyer, newcomers to the local hospo scene, have created a light and breezy space that extends to a comfortable outdoor terrace complete with banquettes, cushions and replica Aalto stools.
Soak up the morning sun with Five Senses coffee, a Mimosa and fresh, smartly plated breakfast dishes such as smoked trout with a fried egg, rosti, and dill crème fraîche, or avocado and poached eggs with broad beans and peas on dark rye. More substantial lunch options include Scotch fillet with perfectly fluffy hand-cut chips, and a knockout fish pasty with house-made tartar sauce and crisply dressed iceberg hearts.
Service continues to the early evening with small eats such as cheese and charcuterie. A tightly focused drinks list includes good craft beer - Newtowners and Stone & Wood - and local wines from the likes of Eden Road and Ravensworth.
Rye Café & Bar, 9 Lonsdale St, Braddon, ACT, 0437 437 842, ryecafe.com.au. Open Mon-Sun 6.30am-4pm, Wed - Sat 4pm - late.
