UberEats launches in Melbourne

Supernormal's prawn and chicken pot-sticker dumplings

Forget puppies or cats - as of 11am today Uber is now delivering lunch and dinner from the likes of Supernormal, Jimmy Grants, Entrecôte and Pidapipó gelateria in Melbourne.

Via the UberEATS app, drivers will deliver food between 11am to 10pm from over 80 restaurants anywhere in the inner city.

"Supernormal is about experiencing the fast-paced and vibrant experience of the food culture in Tokyo. UberEATS will help us bring this experience to people's homes, workplaces or even hotel rooms," says co-owner and chef, Andrew McConnell.

Melbourne is the first Australian city with access to the UberEATS app, which launched last year in Barcelona, Paris, Toronto and a slew of American state capitals. Designed for a more seamless, easy delivery, the Australian version of the app does not feature the 'instant option' menu that was included in New York's launch last month. On this now-shelved menu, set items across various restaurants could take as little as 10 minutes to arrive. Not surprisingly, this proved a promise difficult to deliver.

Uber's foray into Australia's premium restaurant delivery scene is against sharp, established competition. However, UberEATS does come with a trick up its sleeve - to celebrate the launch, delivery is currently free for now. For that we'd have to give five stars, even without the Uber driver asking.
