Problem: you’ve just been voted Australia’s best bar by Gourmet Traveller, but can’t fit in all the customers who want a bite at lunch. Solution: open a deli shop two doors along the same street, and make the people happy.
Adelaide’s Pink Moon Saloon team has opened Pink Moon Deli in a tiny shopfront facing Leigh Street, with bench seating for 12 on the pavement. Chef Matt Standen keeps it simple, filling sandwiches with the same smoky meats cooked in the saloon’s redgum-fired oven – brisket with pickles, grilled Cubans, chicken with mayo – and Golden Gaytime ice-creams for dessert. And on Fridays, for good measure, there’ll be fried chicken sandwiches.

Score a seat and you’ll be able to enjoy beer from one tap or in tins, and some table wine – the deli shares the same licence as the saloon (they’re attached via a shared basement). When the hot-pink neon sign says “open”, there’ll also be freshly squeezed orange juice and filter coffee. It’s a good moon on the rise.
