Melbourne's best Chinese

Flower Drum

Flower Drum

The best Chinese Melbourne has to offer, as seen in the Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide published in August 2017.

Is Flower Drum (17 Market La, Melbourne, 03 9662 3655), the epitome of Cantonese classicism, the city's must-do Sino-dining proposition? Or does the less tidy but memorably fiery Dainty Sichuan (176 Toorak Rd, South Yarra, 03 9078 1686) hold that title?

Directly across from the Drum is HuTong (14-16 Market La, Melbourne, 03 9650 8128), spiritual home of the xiao long bao. Din Tai Fung (287 Lonsdale St, Melbourne, 03 9654 1876) has XLBs that also draw queues; it's a similar scenario at fellow chain Tim Ho Wan (206 Bourke St, Melbourne).

For suburban yum cha, few beat Golden Dragon Palace (363 Manningham Rd, Templestowe, 03 9852 4087), and Tao Tao House (815 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn, 03 9818 0968), while designer David's (4 Cecil Pl, Prahran, 03 9529 5199) lures well-dressed diners to all-you-can-eat weekend sessions. Simon's Peking Duck (197b Middleborough Rd, Box Hill South, 03 9898 5944) delivers on its specialty, while the mackerel dumplings at Shandong Mama (Shop 7, 200 Bourke St, 03 9650 3818) are another cult favourite.
