Its location on some of Sydney’s best harbourside real estate is the first indication that this Rocks institution isn’t just any ordinary old Thai joint. A menu turning out skilled versions of Thai classics – crisp and citrussy Yamba prawns, peanuts, chilli and lime on betel leaves, for example, or a delicate barramundi and coconut curry grilled in banana leaves – is the second. Don’t be fooled by the heritage building in which Sailors Thai resides; insides it’s all polished concrete and modern lines. If it’s a more casual communal dining experience you’re after, head upstairs to the Canteen but if you’re seeking some of the finest Thai in Sydney, with efficient, polite service to match, you’ve found it here. The tasting menu is a savvy choice but don’t miss dessert; the sticky rice with mango and coconut cream or coconut ice-cream and pineapple and ginger sorbet are worth the visit alone.
