When a menu lists a $5 snail supplement you know you’re in serious dining territory, especially when those escargots are Australian. Stop here overnight to savour this most impressive regional restaurant; Jodie Jones’ arrestingly good, creative, mostly local food definitely deserves a detour. The meal might start with mini beetroot tarte Tatin, a primer for the sampler of rainbow trout – sourced from a nearby farm, or a platter of smoked tongue with cauliflower salad. The crown roast and crepinette of delicate baby rabbit with pea purée is imaginative and well executed. This is star-status dining, amplified by Jones’ deft skills and vision, the affable, attentive service, and a global-discovery wine list that tilts to north-east Victoria. We love the locavore philosophy, the whimsy, flavour balances and precision – and the drop-dead gorgeous strawberry and rose-petal terrine. Albury is blessed.
