The food is excellent, the urban boho-meets-beach shack décor charming, but it’s the clifftop views over the azure waters of the Gulf St Vincent that have made Star of Greece a household name. Ignore the accents of the punters buying fish and chips and you could be on the Amalfi coast. Port Willunga squid, served with a lemony mayonnaise, is as it should be – tender and tasting of the sea. A white gazpacho of grapes, purple basil and almond, topped with Spencer Gulf king prawns, has a hint of sweetness and subtle crunch. Simple seafood dishes (beer-battered whiting with wafer-thin potato rounds and green salad) sit happily alongside the likes of soft-shell crab with sweetcorn and coriander, and tea-smoked duck. A bitter chocolate tart is perfectly teamed with passionfruit pulp and ice-cream, but there’s no better way to end lunch than with a dip in the clear, cool ocean.
