In restaurant years, Two Small Rooms should just about qualify for a telegram from the Queen. On a busy corner, the old Queenslander is suffering a bit from her advanced years – a few cosmetic blemishes that add character or detract from the dining experience, depending on your aesthetic sensibility. It’s a comfortable local, though. The monthly-changing menu has a bistro feel about it: steak frites is Hereford sirloin, authentic béarnaise and possibly the best hand-cut chips in the city; bitey cornichons and salsa verde flank a rustic quail and rabbit terrine; Grimaud duck is sauced with thyme-scented jus. The degustation is worth a look, as is the three-course ‘market menu’ ($55) that changes daily. Owner Peter Willumsen is a trained sommelier, so the wine list is distinguished. Josue Lopez recently came onboard as chef and will continue with the Euro-focused menu.
