On a warm day, there are few finer pleasures than relaxing on the vine-clad veranda of this Margaret River icon. Begin with a tasting downstairs and pause to appreciate staff who not only know their stuff but also enjoy their work. The expansive, airy dining room overlooks the region’s first commercial vineyard and a picturesque creek. A charcuterie plate comprising a changing array of meaty house-made goodies is an excellent way to begin. Fat pan-fried gnocchi with goat’s cheese and radicchio is both sophisticated and vego-friendly, as is the beetroot carpaccio with seasonal flowers and quinoa à la Grecque. A slab of grain-fed beef sirloin, served with smoked bone marrow andsalsa verde, will satisfy carnivores. A daily set two- or three-courser is terrific value and offers a chance to try experimental dishes not on the menu. Wines are beyond reproach and served with care and skill.
