Alex Mitcheson
Journalist
Alex is a British travel, food, and drinks journalist who regularly writes for major publications such as Gourmet Traveller, the Sydney Morning Herald, GQ Australia, Selector and the New Zealand Herald. Raised on the wild, castle-strewn coastline of Northumberland, England, from a young age, he was his mum's kitchen helper and spoon licker of the highest degree. After cutting his teeth as a chef while studying English Literature, the call of the antipodes proved too strong to resist. With 15-plus years of hospitality experience across the UK, France, Australia and New Zealand — both back and front of house — he is now one of the country's leading writers and commentators on all things delicious and sip-worthy. Alex's foremost passions are telling untold gastronomic stories and the people behind them — while discovering wines he hasn't yet tasted. As an ex-sommelier, he's still not sure what ignited his affection for wine first: was it the back-breaking backpacker vineyard job or the swig of Beaujolais he mistook for blackcurrant juice at the age of seven?
