Sydney-based chef Josh Niland and wife Julie have announced the imminent closure of their north shore outfit, Petermen. Set to shutter this Sunday, 15 December, the abrupt closure of the Nilands’ St Leonards restaurant comes just under two years since it opened, with the Nilands citing the challenging dining climate as a driving factor.
“Our time on Chandos St, St Leonards, has brought a lot of joy to us and our team, and we have welcomed the most incredible guests,” says Josh Niland in a statement. “The past 12 months have been extremely challenging for independent businesses within the hospitality industry.”
The news comes mere months after the hotly anticipated relocation of Saint Peter to the refurbished Grand National Hotel. It also comes just weeks after the Nilands announced their latest venture — an elevated, family-friendly seafood diner — at a soon-to-open luxury hotel on Hamilton Island.
The Sydney-based chef has pioneered an intensely creative “scale-to-tail” approach to cooking, using almost every part of the fish. His boundary-pushing restaurant Saint Peter is now one of Australia’s finest restaurants, and it’s become an important participant in the global seafood and fishery sustainability conversation, including placing 98th in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants longlist.
The soon-to-close, 60-seat Petermen has carried on his immense mission with a strong local and sustainable ethos since day dot. Unequalled sourcing and handling go without saying in Josh and Julie Niland’s kitchens, but lateral thinking set them alight at Petermen, with dishes every bit as vividly Australian as the Ken Done canvases on the walls.
“We wish to thank the local community for all their support. We are incredibly grateful to our team, who will continue with us at Saint Peter and Fish Butchery. A big thanks to our suppliers, incredible guests, and everyone who has assisted in making Petermen a special restaurant to dine in”, says Niland.
Petermen’s last day of service is Sunday, 15 December. Final bookings can be made via the Petermen website.
