There's a generosity of spirit at this warehouse, a carefully restored 1898 heritage-listed building where diners sit at long tables overlooking the open kitchen. As the name suggests, bread is a focal point and all savoury dishes are designed to complement the slow-fermented loaves baked in Hansel and Gretel, the restaurant's two wood-fired ovens. Start the night with house-cured meats, spreads and flavoured butters (such as smoked tomato and onion ash, or fennel seed and sweet garlic), before moving the party to the menu proper. Little curls of just-cooked squid sit in a pool of fresh tomato sauce, dotted with cubes of watermelon. A generous serve of roasted lamb ribs comes atop an aromatic black garlic and sherry reduction. Desserts like the flourless chocolate cake with Oreo crumbs and burnt toast ice-cream are built for sharing. Want more? There's also a small deli on-site that sells fresh bread, sandwiches and other baked goods.
