Single-origin beans in the city? Head to Coffee Anthology (126 Margaret St, Brisbane, 07 3201 1881) or visit hidden heritage café-bar John Mills Himself (40 Charlotte St, Brisbane, 0434 064 349) or laneway-dweller Strauss (189 Elizabeth St, Brisbane, 07 3236 5232). Felix for Goodness (50 Burnett La, Brisbane, 07 3161 7966) has quirky digs and cracking all-day brunch, too – your avo on sourdough may come with nori sesame crumb and yuzu miso butter, for example.

Pourboy Espresso (271 Grey St, South Bank, 07 3844 0256) pours everything from nitro coffee to fast filter and beyond. Prayers for specialty grade brews are expertly granted at Reverends Fine Coffee and Bar (372 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley) or try Ltd Espresso + Brew Bar (362 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley, 0417 638 070).

Sourced Grocer (11 Florence St, Teneriffe, 07 3852 6734) mixes café smarts with locavore groceries – it’s a sibling to Gauge, another must-visit establishment. Evergreen hole-in-the-wall Bunker Coffee (21 Railway Terrace, Milton, 0422 124 767) has hatched Bessa (23 Little Cribb St, Milton, 0413 542 015) – both share baristas with John Mills Himself. Airy surrounds and kombucha-on-tap feature at Plenty (284 Montague Rd, West End, 07 3255 3330).

Neighbourhood Coffee Roasters (58 Rainworth Rd, Bardon, 07 3367 8501) is also creating another community at Albion (97 Sandgate Rd, Albion), where you can now score brews and cool snacks, too. At Vieille Branche (10 Fox St, Albion, 07 3862 1840), expect bistronomy-style goodness in eclectic surrounds. Scout (190 Petrie Tce, Petrie Terrace, 07 3367 2171) is a chilled hangout for healthy, balanced fare.

Bare Bones Society (Jindalee Home, 22/34 Goggs Rd, Jindalee, 07 3715 5571) and sibling Same Same But Different (640 Oxley Rd, Corinda, 07 3278 2150) are the handiwork of fine-dining chef Kym Machin.

The kitchen garden at Wild Canary (2371 Moggill Rd, Brookfield, 07 3378 2805) is impressive – so is what’s on your plate. At Chouquette (19 Barker St, New Farm, 07 3358 6336), crisp French pâtisserie is the hook. Naim (14 Collingwood St, Paddington, 07 3172 1655; 109 Melbourne St, South Brisbane, 07 3255 2058) boasts Middle-Eastern flair, as does Café Grenadine (54 Martha St, Camp Hill, 07 3189 3374). King Arthur (164C Arthur St, Fortitude Valley, 07 3358 1670) lords it over adjacent James Street and at Light Coffee (2a/89 Lytton Rd, East Brisbane) filter shines.
