A string of bright young things may have recently arrived on the southside dining scene, but the prized tables at France-Soir are as hotly contested as ever. Now in its third decade, this steadfast French bistro delivers fad-free dining for those who crave consistency over novelty and social media cachet. Engaging waiters weave between paper-topped tables, pouring vintage Champagnes and Grand Cru reds from the exceptional French-leaning cellar. The menu reads like a trusted guide to bistro classics: foie gras, duck confit, and steak frites with feather-light béarnaise. A mirror running the length of the narrow dining room is scrawled with the day's specials, enticing diners with lobster bisque or wine-braised rabbit. Desserts promise retro comfort in the form of crème brûlée with an optimal toffee-to-custard ratio, or a wedge of tarte Tatin with a pleasing burnt-sugar edge, proving that age and beauty aren't mutually exclusive.
