We'd call it a quiet achiever if the music wasn't rocking quite so hard. Izakaya Fujiyama is one of Sydney's top destinations for Japanese snacks and possibly its best for sake. There's a world of sake on offer and most of the waitstaff can follow even the vaguest instruction ("I want something to cool me down") to find you the perfect glass (and if they can't, try one of the 78 Japanese whiskies on offer instead). There's a lot to love about the enormous menu - from the aburi-style seared swordfish sashimi to a salad of grilled octopus with potato, grapefruit and a smoky soy sauce that you'll wish was on everything. The hand-inked specials menu contains many gems, although some attempts at dude food (wagyu cheek buns) are best avoided. The same sometimes goes for the not-so-Japanese desserts, such as the Snickers caramel and peanut-butter sundae - opt for the vanilla ice-cream with sweet Japanese vinegar instead.
