REVIEW
Visiting Magill Estate is like travelling in time: past Dr Penfold's 1840s cottage, up to bluestone cellars housing Australia's most famous wine. Back to the future, Magill Estate Kitchen is a sleek daytime dining space to complement the wine tasting room, contained in contemporary pavilions overlooking vines down to the city. The casual lunch menu - a counterpoint to the adjacent Magill Estate Restaurant's dégustation dining - offers bright and appealing dishes to share, grills to complement Penfolds reds, and grazing boards to linger over. A summery take on salmon is served in a bowl of gazpacho, the grilled lamb rump and eggplant is dressed with soft herbs, and smoked beets arrive with tangy curd and crunchy hazelnuts. Wines span the Penfolds catalogue, by the bottle or two by-the-glass measures, including Grange. There's also a great value express lunch, delivered briskly by helpful staff, but with this view, why be a slave to your watch?
