Sitting pretty in wine country, surrounded by mountain and vineyard, Margan is more than worthy of a detour. The estate bottles its share of fine wine (not least the shiraz), but it's also a fine place to while away an hour or two at the table. They're good at growing things other than grapes, too, as the seared duck breast with liver parfait, paired with roasted beets from the garden, or the juicy chicken enhanced by sweetcorn purée, amply demonstrate. More gutsy flavour can be found in a rich double-dose of locally farmed beef, the contrasting textures of slow-cooked cheek and rump-cap united by a scoop of creamy mashed potato, while smoked pork belly is teamed with pumpkin, black garlic and feta, plus crackling for good measure. Service is polite - and country-paced. But there's no need to rush. The sponge cake, topped with apple sorbet, thick cream and fresh figs hand-picked the same day, is more than worth lingering over.
