"We don't buy fruit and vegetables," begins the preface to the menu. "Our 90-year-old orchard and heirloom vegetable garden, which is grown from last year's saved seeds, write the menu for us." And why would you when the land blesses you with blood plums that, once cured in salt and Kampot pepper, brilliantly highlight the lushness of raw kingfish. At a time when kitchen-garden dining leans exclusive and expensive, this country-casual dining room happily goes the other way, right down to the steak and chips (the "chips" are housemade crisps while the beef is piled with heirloom tomatoes and plated with a house ketchup). Service is as breezy as the vistas of the forest and Millbrook's man-made lake. Stay for dessert – those plums again, barbecued and paired with a shortbread with mascarpone parfait, perhaps – or another tilt at the bargain-priced vino.
