Jarrahdale is an hour by car from Perth - far enough to feel like you're escaping the city, but still well within day-trip territory. Arrive here for lunch and you'll enjoy the property's grand reveals, from the manicured vines and grounds to the forest surrounds and the splendour of the stone building itself. The kitchen garden mightn't be as conspicuous as the rest of the estate's charms, but its pickings feature prominently in Guy Jeffreys' cooking. Gently grilled octopus and chorizo are teamed with pickled root vegetables and safflower mayonnaise. Barbecued corn and stone fruits are sweet foils for pork shoulder, steak and crackling, while fresh-picked plums add spark to a spiced mascarpone parfait. Unsurprisingly, keenly priced estate bottlings dominate the compact wine list, with aged releases available on the museum list. Service is best described as friendly rather than finessed, but suits Millbrook's likeable brand of country charm.
