Regardless of what you think about subcontinental food, consider the following: a Pakistani Scotch egg slathered in golden chicken mince and hot tomato relish; lightly battered soft-shell crab with pickled cucumber and mint; and a dhal of such smoky depths, it's like you've never really tasted dhal before (the secret is Kashmiri chilli and tempered mustard seeds). Tonka debuted in Duckboard Place in 2013 and, suddenly, Indian got sexy. The appeal's partly due to its hidden laneway address, ex-nightclub digs and the picture windows over plane trees and the MCG. But mostly it's about the service (suave and confident) and the vibe (always up), and that food: a steak tartare seasoned with vindaloo spice and fenugreek, say, or charred cauliflower made insane with garam masala salt and a creamy, lush yoghurt dressing. The wine selection is excellent and encourages letting the hair down. Big celebration? Ask to see the special Burgundy list.
